To 'Be in the Now' is something I have read about so often on my journey towards inner healing. I think I realised the importance of this when I first went for counselling many years ago and was asked 'what goal do you hope for?' The question threw me, I thought I just wanted to feel better. I realised it was so much more than that, yet my longings seemed unrealistic and therefore unachievable. After considering for awhile I answered that I would want to be able to sit in a chair for up to five minutes and feel at peace. This seemed a mountain of a goal at the time, now it is a speck compared to the gifts of healing I have encountered over the years.
Being in the moment of 'now' is the underlying goal and work that permeates my life journey. I would like to share the beautiful happenings that give me the gift of returning to the 'now' when I am somewhere in the past or the future filled with anxiety and dread. So......... What are these happenings? Little by little I will describe my experiences.

Be Longing to Belong.....

One of the first questions I faced when I began my journey to understand what Becoming Safely Embodied meant was about Belonging. Understanding what was meant by this took time. Childhood trauma led to a deep sense of worthlessness and adulthood brought a void of attempting to be what I thought I should for other people. I say a void because living according to what I assumed others wanted me to be meant I was neglecting my real self. She got very lost and, now I know, very lonely.
Deidre brings this into the Becoming Safely Embodied Skills early on as I was posed with the question of Belonging. I read of a conversation Deidre had with the poet David Whyte, I researched and discovered a new landscape filled with poetry that made so much sense to my soul.
Meditating on the concept of Belonging has brought me to a place where I have discovered my Self. Now I know I belong to myself. No one else can own me, I do not have to live the rest of my life being the creature I assumed others wanted me to be. No self imposed roles anymore......
My Heart and My Self belong to each other, living in harmony with an enabling working practice.

THE HOUSE OF BELONGING

I awoke
this morning
in the gold light
turning this way
and that

thinking for
a moment
it was one
day
like any other.

But
the veil had gone
from my
darkened heart
and
I thought

it must have been the quiet
candlelight
that filled my room,

it must have been
the first
easy rhythm
with which I breathed
myself to sleep,

it must have been
the prayer I said
speaking to the otherness
of the night.

And
I thought
this is the good day
you could
meet your love,

this is the black day
someone close
to you could die.

This is the day
you realize
how easily the thread
is broken
between this world
and the next

and I found myself
sitting up
in the quiet pathway
of light,

the tawny
close grained cedar
burning round
me like fire
and all the angels of this housely
heaven ascending
through the first
roof of light
the sun has made.

This is the bright home
in which I live,
this is where
I ask
my friends
to come,
this is where I want
to love all the things
it has taken me so long
to learn to love.

This is the temple
of my adult aloneness
and I belong
to that aloneness
as I belong to my life.

There is no house
like the house of belonging.
